MILFORD-HOPEDALE YOUTH SOCCER IS LOOKING
FOR ADULTS INTERESTED IN BECOMING
CERTIFIED REFEREES
We welcome and look forward to our youngsters joining our referee ranks. However, this year we have a real need for more adult (over age 18) referees to help officiate our games.
Referees are paid for the games they do. You can be a Referee (in the center) or an Assistant Referee (along the lines). All referees are certified by USSOCCER. Our game assignors do a great job of pairing newer Referees with others who are more experienced, so you will not be ‘out there all alone’.
All games are in Milford or Hopedale – there is no need or requirement to go to other towns to officiate. While you will probably do most of your games for the Travel Program, you may also do In-Town games.
Adults should take the Grade 8 course…not sure what a Grade 8 is, then please visit our website for more information. Note: it has nothing to do with school. (In Soccer, a Grade 1 is the best in the world).
If you are interested, please go to the Referee Section of MHYSA.com for more information, including contact information.

Columbus Day Weekend Reminders
For the official BAYS position, please click on this link:
BAYS Playbook
It is never too early to plan for this weekend. Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 9 - 12) is usually a very busy soccer weekend. There are lots of tournaments that our teams go to and some of our referees participate in. It is important that you have everything lined up.
If your team is going to participate in a tournament, you must:
- Prepone your regular travel game - reschedule and play the game before the regularly scheduled date.
- Must follow BAYS rescheduling rules and
- Must follow MHYSA Make up game scheduling procedures.
- If were to play home, you MUST contact and inform Ron Dias and Ed Wolf as soon as possible.
If your team is not going to a tournament but your scheduled opponent is, you must:
- Prepone your regular travel game - reschedule and play the game before the regularly scheduled date.
- Must follow BAYS rescheduling rules and
- Must follow MHYSA Make up game scheduling procedures.
- If were to play home, you MUST contact and inform Ron Dias and Ed Wolf as soon as possible.
(Failure to follow these could result in forfeit of games.)
Why is this important? Because we need to make sure we have enough referees to handle regular games. Please keep in mind that a lot of referees also participate in these tournaments - this is a great opportunity for them to gain experience.
Also, it costs MHYSA money if you don't inform Ron and Ed beforehand. In the past, referees have gone to officiate their assigned games only to discover that the game was defered. We still have to pay the referees when teams don't show up for scheduled games.
So be smart, plan ahead!

Changes - Travel Soccer Program for 2009/10 Soccer year
In order to meet the changing needs of town travel soccer in Milford and Hopedale, MHYSA has announced two important changes to the travel program beginning with the Fall 2009 soccer season.
1) Similar to how Under-13 and Under-14 players are currently combined and play in the U14 age group, MHYSA will combine Under-11 and Under-12 in the U12 program. All children that fall into the U11 or U12 age groups for Fall 2009 will tryout together and be placed accordingly. The tryouts for this age group are more appropriately called placements, as all children in the U-12 program that both register by the deadline and tryout are placed on a team. Children that do not meet both of these criteria will be placed on the waiting list and given a roster spot should one become available.
These two age groups have been combined in the past both in BAYS (Boston Area Youth Soccer – the league to which MHYSA travel belongs) and in Milford-Hopedale Soccer. The change comes about to compensate for season to season fluctuations in age groups and will better allow us to field developmentally appropriate and properly placed teams for these children.
See Fall 2009 age group listing on the Age Groups Page of this website.
2) Brand new to MHYSA travel soccer, children in the Under-9 age group, who had previously only had the option of playing in the intown program can now choose to tryout for the U-10 travel team or choose to play in-town U-10 soccer. Again, similar to the aforementioned combining of age groups, all children in Under-9 and Under-10 age groups will tryout together for a U-10 team and will be placed accordingly. MHYSA plans to field up to 2 travel teams in the combined U-10 age group. All children in the U-9 and U-10 age groups that are not placed on a travel team are placed on an in-town team.
Both these changes are applicable for both the girl’s and boy’s programs.
Registration for the Fall 2009 season is now OPEN.
Questions regarding the registration process should be directed to admin@mhysa.com.
Questions regarding the changes to the travel program or the travel program in general should be sent to travel@mhysa.com.
Questions regarding the in-town Under-6 through Under-10 programs should be sent to Intown@mhysa.com.
Look forward to seeing you all on the field!!

Parent and Medical Information / Registration Reminder (posted 11/8)
As a matter of course, all MHYSA coaches have copies of Parent Contact information as well as the Medical Release forms for all rostered players. You provide this information when you register your child with the league. This is important information for the coach to have.
The online registration system makes this easier on you as the information from the previous season is automatically included against your child's profile. But, things change and this often gets overlooked.
Please, when registering for the Fall 2010 season, take a moment to review Parent Contact (names, telephone numbers and email addresses) as well as the Medical Release information and update it as necessary to make sure the information your coaches have is accurate and up to date.
Thank you.

PRACTICE FIELD NOTICES - PLEASE
Field space is on a first come, first serve basis. Please try to set up your area so that you can share the available resources, i.e. use a goal for 1/2 your practice and let another team, use for the remainder.
Be aware that many teams, including older teams, practice without a goal at all. All drills and scrimmages can be done with cones exclusively.

Makeup Game Procedures
The Fall 2009 season is open. No one needs to be reminded of our how unpredictable the weather can be here in New England. It is likely that at some point during the season you will need to reschedule a game because of field closure or other reasons. If you have to do this, don't fear, it can be done.
Please do remember, we have shortage of qualified referees this season. It is important that when you look to schedule a Makeup Game, you allow enough time for referees to be assigned. With anything less than one week's notice, there are no guarantees of referee availability.
Please take a moment to review the Makeup Games procedures that can be found on the left hand side of this page.
Any approved Make Up will be posted on the website Calendar. There will be no changes made to the Master Travel Team schedules.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the board.

Safety First - NO Jewelry, NO Casts
MHYSA, along with Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS), places player safety as one of the top priorities. If you would like the specific details on these issues, please check the BAYS Rule Book which can be found on the BAYS website (see our links).
- NO Jewelry of any kind can be worn during a game and should not be worn during practices. This includes necklaces, rings, watches, bracelets barrettes, belts and earrings. Sorry folks, but taping or putting bandages over the earrings do not count. If your child comes to a game with any kind of jewelry on, they will not be allowed to play until the situation is resolved. (Medic Alert's and items of religious nature can be left on as long as they are taped over and secured.)
- NO Casts - players with plaster casts or hard splints even if padded, cannot play - even with parental or medical approval.
Ultimately, the decision is up to the Referee.

Get Involved - Opportunities with MHSYA Board of Directors
Milford-Hopedale Youth Soccer Association is an all-volunteer organization. We are all interested in providing an outstanding program for our children. It takes many people to keep it going. We are always looking for volunteers to help keep the organization running. Have ever asked, “How can I help?” If you would like to find out more about how you can volunteer or help, please contact our league President, Paul Braza.
